this is really interesting and raises a lot of points I don’t think I’ve ever seen discussed:

if there’s a “cycle of abuse”, how come it’s not mostly women sexually abusing children, when more girls than boys are sexually abused? it doesn’t add up

if we talk about “paedophilia” instead of child abusers we allow them to act like they’re being oppressed for their ‘orientation’ and ‘they can’t help it’, which is both dangerous to children and homophobic (I see this one discussed occasionally)

if we talk about “paedophilia” we ignore that most men who rape children are also sexually interested in adults

if we talk about “paedophilia”, with the two above points, we conjure up an image of a man who rapes little boys because of his lack of sexual interest in women. but this is false on both counts in the majority of cases

women who were abused are assumed to allow men to abuse their children - and she’s blamed, not him

because they report their children to be abused more, it’s assumed that they are abused more. but the truth seems to be the opposite: women who were abused are both more likely to recognise the signs in their own children, and more protective of abused children.

it’s not single mothers who look for abusers (they legally can’t check, unlike employers!) - it’s abusers who look for single mothers, particularly women who were abused themselves (people talk about this a little bit)

the whole thing is harmful to those who’ve been abused as children - most don’t go on to abuse children. not only does it make authority figures doubt them, it makes them doubt themselves

I rang the literary editors of a few ‘respected’ papers and asked them how much space they were giving to women writers in their ‘review’ sections. Perfectly predictable response. They all said the allocation was fair. One said it was equal, and one prominent editor went so far as to say women are dominating the reviews!

… What happened when I asked who was doing the talking in mixed sex conversations? Well, it was the women of course. And then when you get to measure it you find that women get to talk about 10-20% of the time in conversations with men. A woman who talks about a third of the time is seen to be dominating the talk.

And what happened when I asked teachers who got their attention in class? Well, it was all equal, wasn’t it? No preferences there. And you measure it and find that girls get about 10-20% of the teacher’s attention. Any more, and the boys think it unfair - and go into revolt.

So what do you think I found with the reviews?

I would have predicted about 10-20% of the space went to women’s books. Well, it is less than 6% of the column inches. And the reasonable editor who thinks that women are getting more than their share is one of the worst offenders. Poor boys! It really tells you something when they think only 94% of the review section is not enough, doesn’t it? When 6% for women is too much you get some idea how much men think they are entitled to - as a fair deal.

The Red Brigade: A Lesson In Empowerment

For anyone who wasn’t already aware, this kick-ass group of street-savvy women, many of whom are rape survivors, regularly patrol the streets ensuring safety for women.

They have trained in martial arts, and they literally beat men who assault or rape the women of their community.

Named for their bright red outfits, the Red Brigade was formed in November 2011 for young women suffering sexual abuse in the northern Indian city of Lucknow.

From a core membership of 15, ranging in age from 11 to 25, they now have more than 100 members.

They are intelligent and dangerous and carry a simple message for the men who have made their lives a misery: they will no longer tolerate being groped, gawped at, or raped. [The Guardian]

I cannot fully explain how wonderful they are! While it would be easy for detractors to paint them as some merciless mob, they are literally fighting against a culture of prevalent rape and male dominance. You can read more about them here, here and here — and they also have a blog!
